A brief Cyprus wine history lesson...

330 AD
Ancient Origins (circa 2000 BCE - 330 CE)

The inception of Cyprus wine stretches back to ancient times, with historical evidence indicating wine-making practices as early as 2000 BCE.

During the Bronze Age, the tradition flourished, and Cyprus wines gained prominence in the Eastern Mediterranean.

The Hellenistic and Roman periods (circa 330 BCE - 330 CE) witnessed the export of Cyprus wines to various corners of the Roman Empire.

330 - 1878 AD
Byzantine Era to Ottoman Rule (330 - 1878)

In the Byzantine period, wine-making persisted, with monasteries playing a pivotal role in preserving the art of wine-making.

The Ottoman rule presented challenges to the island's wine production, including limitations on vine planting. Nevertheless, vineyards endured, producing wines primarily for local consumption.

Renaissance and Modern Era (1878 - 20th Century)

The conclusion of Ottoman rule in 1878 marked a renaissance for Cyprus wine, witnessing the introduction of new grape varieties and advancements in wine-making technology.

The island's wines gained international acclaim, with Commandaria, a sweet dessert wine, standing out as one of the world's oldest named wines still in production during the mid-20th century.

1878 - Present
Contemporary Revival (Late 20th Century - Present)

In the late 20th century, there was a renewed focus on quality wine-making in Cyprus. Modern viticultural and wine-making practices were adopted, and winemakers began experimenting with international grape varieties alongside traditional ones.

The wine industry underwent a transformation, with boutique wineries emerging and emphasizing the unique terroir of Cyprus.

Today, Cyprus is home to a diverse range of wines, including reds, whites, and rosés, produced by both commercial and boutique wineries. The island's winemakers continue to explore innovative approaches while honouring the ancient tradition that defines Cyprus wines.
